In addition, since many cancers spread via the bloodstream and the entire cardiac output passes through the lungs, it is common for cancer metastases to occur within the lung. Breast cancer may invade directly through local spread, and through lymph node metastases. After metastasis to the liver, colon cancer frequently metastasizes to the lung. Prostate cancer, germ cell cancer and renal cell carcinoma may also metastasize to the lung. Treatment of respiratory system cancer depends on the type of cancer. Surgical removal of part of a lung (lobectomy, segmentectomy, or wedge resection) or of an entire lung pneumonectomy), along with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, are all used. The chance of surviving lung cancer depends on the cancer stage at the time the cancer is diagnosed, and to some extent on the histology, and is only about 14-17% overall. It is a disease in which muscles of bronchi contract, making it difficult for air to reach the lungs. One treatment of asthma is to use an inhaler which contains a drug to relax muscles of bronchi. Asthma is a difficulty in breathing causing wheezing due to inflammation of bronchi and bronchioles, this causes a restriction in the airflow into the alveoli. Asthma attacks can be brought on by triggers, such as air pollution, tobacco smoke, factory fumes, cleaning solvents, infections, pollens, dust, foods, cold air, exercise, chemicals and medications. Triggers are highly individual and may not be related to allergens. Many asthmatics are not allergic to common allergens such as mold. (NSCLC).2 

Types of Lung Cancer

SCLC: Approximately 13% of lung cancers belong to the SCLC category. This type of lung cancer is a more aggressive form of the disease and tends to spreadquickly2, NSCLC: A vast majority of lung cancers (≈87%) belong to the NSCLC category.2 Based on histologic features, NSCLC is further divided into 3 main subtypes, namely adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma2 Squamous cell carcinomas typically arise from thin, flat squamous cells; in contrast, adenocarcinomas arise from mucus-secreting cells that line thealveoli1

Lung Cancer Demographic Statistics Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men (second only to prostate cancer) and  women (second only to breast cancer), accounting for ≈15% of all new cancers diagnosed1 Lung cancer mainly afflicts older people, with a reported average age of 71 years at the time of diagnosis; fewer than 3% of lung cancers are detected in people younger than 45 years1 The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2010, 222,520 new cases of lung cancer were diagnosed in the United States (116,750 men and 105,770 women).1Studies indicate that African American men are ≈40% more likely to develop lung cancer than Caucasian men1.

More people succumb to lung cancer than to colon, breast, and prostate cancerscombined.1 Current estimates indicate that more than 400,000 lung cancer survivors live in the United States today1
